This book was better than I anticipated. The one thing I truly appreciate it is the Carbide Insert Applications page as it's not always easy to remember what inserts can do what type of machining and this section makes it virtually impossible to choose the wrong inserts.
Pros
Easy to Understand
Sturdy and made for the shop floor
A good selection of knowlege
Cons
Not as in depth as I would have liked

I paid over R700 for this book, from the official distributor, and I just don't think I'll be turning to it very often. But we'll see.
Pros
It's compact, and covers a wide range of topics.
Sometimes information isn't easy to find online because you're not familiar with the terminology - the book form removes that obstacle.
If I was going to keep the book handy, there are several sections that are useful pocket references, like the conversion tables, the bending allowances, the speeds and feeds, etc.
Cons
It's lacking in both scope and depth. Take the metals comparison table, for example: Only 3 alloys of Al are mentioned, they're not named, and there's no reference to Young's Modulus, which is an essential design consideration. The "Plastics", "Solvents" and "Adhesives" sections seem to gloss over the topic - engineers need specifics as well as descriptions.
Some sections ("Brass" and "Adhesives") haven't been translated from gibberish to metric.
I'm never quite sure what's verbatim to a standard and derived from a standard, particularly regarding unit conversions.

I have found this little black book an invaluable tool in my workshop on so many occasions from imperial to metric conversions, speed charts for various tools, even a Trigonometry formula to calculate the pitch of a roof I'm building, right down to the drill point sharpening guide
Pros
I have found that the information in it is very precise and extensive and the pages just wipe clean after being handled by my grubby mits and being spiral bound it opens out flat for easy reading.
Cons
I have had this book for awhile now and I cant fault it.
Modern design, good data

Comments
The black book has a good, modern layout and design with clear and well drawn illustrations and an intelligent use of colour throughout, it has been immediately helpful and has been an interesting read in areas that I would not normally explore.
I’m glad I found this book.
Pros
The choice of the data presented is well judged, given the huge pool of information that exists and is well suited to the home shop.
The spiral binding is very helpful and the quality of the paper is excellent. I chose the smaller format and it works very well for me.
Cons
While it does the job, the index could be more extensive.
